National Democratic Party (NDP) leader Martin Lukato has outlined key priorities he wants to focus on as he prepares to take his seat in Parliament. The areas he will be targeting include housing, land reform, and job creation. Lukato also expressed his readiness to challenge colonial-era laws that he believes have failed to benefit the nation over the past 35 years.
After two decades in politics without securing a parliamentary seat, Lukato has finally won a seat in the National Assembly following last year’s elections. He told NewsOnOne his main goal will be to implement motions that address the pressing needs of Namibians.
“I will make sure that the laws, those enacted before and after independence, those that do not benefit the masses should be amended and repealed so that others should be abolished completely.
So, to regulate, and amend the laws that can benefit all Namibian people. So that is one of them. From there, I’m looking at the economy of our country, including the landless people, including those who need housing, electricity, and job creation,” said Lukato.
Lukato, who founded the NDP in 2003, reaffirmed his commitment to working alongside fellow lawmakers to bring about meaningful change.
“I’m not going to attack other members or fight with the other members. Myself, I believe in my culture, where I come from, when we speak, we solve things, we solve things peacefully.
I’m prepared to work with my colleagues, those who will be in the chamber, whether from a ruling party or the opposition parties, because there is no boundary between me and those MPs from other political parties,” said Lukato.
