“One Namibian House.”

The Bank of Namibia has officially launched the N$60 commemorative banknote in honour of the late President Dr. Hage G. Geingob. The special edition banknote, unveiled earlier today, pays tribute to Dr. Geingob’s dedication to the country’s democracy, economic development, and social inclusivity.

Speaking at the launch, President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba described the initiative as a lasting symbol of Dr. Geingob’s leadership.

“This commemorative banknote immortalises Dr. Geingob’s steadfast commitment to peace, unity, and resilience. Through this banknote, we honour his achievements and inspire future generations to uphold the values he championed.”

The President highlighted Dr. Geingob’s legacy of unity and inclusivity, noting his vision of the “One Namibian House.” “His policies reflected his commitment to social justice, from advancing social grants for the vulnerable and elderly to ensuring that all Namibians, regardless of ethnicity and gender, had a place in our nation’s story,” he added.

Vice President and President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of carrying forward the visions of both Dr. Geingob and Namibia’s Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma.

“The vision of Dr. Nujoma and Dr. Geingob for an inclusive Namibia premised on unity in diversity should be our guiding principle.”

A tribute to economic legacy

Bank of Namibia Governor Johannes !Gawaxab underscored the banknote’s role in preserving Dr. Geingob’s economic contributions. “Among his many achievements, he spearheaded the establishment of the Welwitschia Fund, ensuring that the wealth derived from our nation’s natural resources benefits future generations. This fund stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to economic sustainability and social development,” he said.

He further explained the significance of the N$60 denomination, stating:

“Dr. Geingob devoted 60 years of his life to serving Namibia, from his time in exile to his leadership in an independent Namibia. The number 60 carries profound symbolic meaning, reflecting his extensive commitment to the country.”

Design and security features

The commemorative banknote blends artistry, innovation, and security. Printed on polymer for durability, it features a portrait of Dr. Geingob in a transparent window, symbolising his lasting impact on the nation. Key security elements include coloured intaglio print, Argentum silver ink, and gold accents that appear when tilted. The Independence Memorial Museum is also showcased in a secondary transparent window, reinforcing national pride.

Moreover, features include embedded micro text reading “Forward Ever, Backward Never, 60” as a tribute to Dr. Geingob’s philosophy. Raised tactile dots enhance accessibility for the visually impaired, while rolling bar colour-change effects and a custom serial number starting with ‘HGG’ further distinguish the note. Under UV light, hidden design elements such as the Namibian flag and a glowing “60” numeral become visible.

Public awareness and circulation

To familiarise the public with the banknote’s unique features, the Bank of Namibia will roll out an extensive awareness campaign before its official issuance on 17 March 2025. The commemorative banknote will circulate alongside existing currency, serving as both legal tender and a collector’s item.

This initiative underscores the Bank of Namibia’s commitment to preserving national identity through currency while honouring key figures who have shaped the country’s history.
