MUSIC FACTS NO ONE EVER ASKED FOR BUT I’M GOING TO TELL YOU ANYWAY!!!
The year is 1995! Fresh out of the Microsoft sweatshop comes Windows ‘95!
By today’s standards… ew! But back then! Groundbreaking!
The computer world was changed, the age of the nerd was peaking with no end in sight!
And Bill Gates was rolling in it!!!
So, you installed the operating system and you do what anyone would start doing. You start exploring! And eventually you find a folder called “Fun Stuff!”
Not to be confused with that current folder you have on your computer full of fun stuff if you know what I mean…
Anyway, you go in, and you found a music video for a band…
Directed by Spike Jonze, it was the music video for Weezer’s “Buddy Holly!”
Turns out, the bands record label, Geffen, had negotiated the deal with Microsoft only… they never told the members!
Drummer Patrick Wilson would go on to say:
“I was furious because at the time I was like, ‘How are they allowed to do this without permission?’ Turns out it was one of the greatest things that could have happened to us. Can you imagine that happening today? It’s like, there’s one video on Youtube, and it’s your video.”
Weezer Drummer, Patrick Wilson
It’s easy to understand WHY Patrick changed his tune considering Windows 95’ sold over 7 million copies in the first 5 weeks, and over 40 million copies in its first year!
The bands popularity skyrocketed after that, they won a bunch of awards, had platinum albums so yeah… not bad!
Which leads me to this question:
When Apple did a similar thing with that U2 album being pre-installed on everyone’s phones, why was there so much uproar?
Is it because Bono (U2 Singer) is… who he is?
