Who is replacing humans?

todayJanuary 30, 2026

Background

Every time I switch on the news or see what’s happening in the world, it seems like us humans are hellbent on self destruction…

So while that seems like something that could be a reality, it got me thinking…

If we humans disappeared, would we be replaced? And if so… by who?

Well, lets see!

There are several animals out in the wild that show the kind of intelligence that could, over millions of years, develop into something more complex.

Coming in at 3rd place:

  • Chimpanzees and Bonobos!

(Baby Chimpanzee)

If you haven’t already, do yourself a favour and google primates using tools! I’m not talking about an Orangutan working on a job site in and Earthmover.

Instead, primates like chimpanzees have used sticks to fish out termites from their nests, rocks to crack nuts, and even leaves as makeshift sponges.

When communicating, they use vocalizations and gestures, and they plan ahead.

(Baby Bonobo)

Bonobos take it further with advanced social cooperation and empathy, often resolving conflict without violence. That sounds a whole lot more evolved than the way we humans handle things!!!

Coming in at second:

  • Birds!

Birds like New Caledonian crows have been to not only craft tools, but modify them! They’ve been seen using hooked twigs to pull insects out of hard to reach places. They also plan ahead and store tools for later… unlike me who leaves them lying around according to my dad.

Magpies recognize themselves in mirrors, which in animals is a rare sign of self-awareness. They also have problem-solving skills, which coupled with their ability to adapt to urban areas and cities show serious cognitive range.

And coming in 1st place:

  • The mighty Octopus!!!

These guys are SERIOUSLY SMART!!!

(Octopus… call him Greg)

From unscrewing jars to get to the food inside and using things like coconut shells as portable shelters, to navigating mazes and solving puzzles with surprising efficiency, Octopi are stepping up the game!!!

The giant Pacific octopus has been shown to have a long memory and if you catch them staring… be worried! Be VERY worried! They can learn by simply watching, and have seen escaping complex enclosures.

Don’t worry, we’re not going to war with any of these animals for global domination anytime soon!

In fact, none of them have the infrastructure humans built! But! Their behavior suggests the “raw material” is there and under the right evolutionary conditions (and the wiping out of the human race), one of them could take over.

Honestly,  I wouldn’t be mad at animal taking over… my money is on the Octopus!
