The University of Namibia (UNAM) is preparing to establish the country’s first Department of Applied Nuclear Science, a strategic initiative aligned with the 6th National Development Plan (NDP6). The department will offer education and research opportunities in nuclear applications.
UNAM spokesperson Simon Namesho said the new department will support Namibia’s broader goal of leveraging its uranium resources domestically, as well as regionally, and building capacity in nuclear science and technology.

Namibia, the world’s fourth-largest uranium producer, is seeking to diversify the use of its uranium beyond export, aiming for national development benefits through nuclear applications. The country accounts for approximately 10% of global uranium output. Several major uranium mines are located in Namibia, including Husab and Rössing, with Husab being the third-largest uranium mine globally. Nuclear technology is seen as pivotal for advancing sectors such as nuclear medicine, food safety, industrial irradiation, and clean energy under NDP6.

The plan targets billions in investment and establishment of regulatory and research infrastructure by 2030. Alongside academic leadership, Namibia is working with local regulatory bodies such as the National Radiation Protection Authority and international partners like the IAEA to ensure safety and skill development in the nuclear sector
