Two Namibian police officers died in separate car accidents on Friday and Saturday in the Oshana and Oshikoto regions.
On Saturday morning, 35-year-old Sergeant Walenga Immanuel Kauluma Tukwatha died upon arrival at Oshakati State Hospital after being involved in a car accident at Omaalala along the Ongwediva-Ondangwa road. Tukwatha served as a unit commander at the Ondangwa Aviation Unit.
According to the police’s weekend crime report, the driver of a Toyota Corolla was allegedly travelling from Ongwediva to Ondangwa when the vehicle collided head-on with a black Toyota hatchback that was travelling in the opposite direction and overtaking another vehicle.
“The driver and passengers from both vehicles were rushed to Oshakati hospital for medical attention,” the report stated.
On Friday, 51-year-old police officer Sergeant Nehoya Joseph Nekongo died after losing control of his vehicle while overtaking, causing it to overturn. Nekongo was a member of the Border and Infrastructure Protection Division in the Oshikoto Region.
The police report stated that Nekongo was driving a silver Fortuner from Omuthiya to Ondangwa when he attempted to overtake a silver VW Golf 7. In the process, he sideswiped the Golf at the driver’s door, lost control of the vehicle, and it overturned. Nekongo was alone in the vehicle, while the four occupants of the Golf escaped unharmed.
