Several radio stations have gone off air following a power failure at the Gross Herzog transmission tower, a key telecommunications hub located south of Windhoek. The tower, which stands 41.2 metres tall on the Gross Herzog Mountain, has been out of full operation since Monday.

The outage is linked to a generator at the site running out of diesel fuel, leaving the structure without backup power. The tower, which has been in operation for four decades, is essential infrastructure managed by PowerCom and used by multiple broadcasters and service providers.

Radio silence today affected a wide range of stations, including commercial broadcasters, causing significant disruption. Industry insiders estimate the advertising revenue lost could run into the hundreds of thousands of Namibian dollars, as scheduled programming and commercials were unable to air.

Telecom Namibia, responsible for maintaining the facility, has so far declined to comment on the matter.

Despite the widespread FM disruption, Future Media has confirmed that listeners can still access their favourite stations online via streaming platforms, offering a limited lifeline for audiences and advertisers.
