Paratus Namibia has launched the country’s first private mobile network, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s digital transformation. The N$600 million investment introduces a nationwide 4G LTE network and an eSIM service, aiming to enhance connectivity across Namibia.
The initial rollout covers 50 major towns and 80 communities, with a primary focus on the east-west corridor and the Windhoek-Oshakati route. Managing Director Andrew Hall emphasized the strategic placement of towers to ensure comprehensive coverage.
“The tower infrastructure, the physical radios, all belong to Paratus. We’ve built a network,” Hall stated. “The launch plan was to launch with about 230 towers, which basically gives us about a 70% population coverage.”
Paratus owns an extensive fiber network throughout the country, ensuring robust backhaul. While the company utilizes third-party service providers for redundancy, Hall highlighted the importance of maintaining network stability.
“Even if you have your own infrastructure to a town or a tower, you will want a second option that should a failure occur, at least the network stays up,” he added.
In addition to the 4G LTE network, Paratus has introduced an eSIM service, allowing customers to activate mobile services without the need for a physical SIM card. This move aligns with global trends towards digital SIM technology, offering enhanced convenience and flexibility for users.
Paratus offers a range of data packages to cater to diverse customer needs. The “Infinity LITE” series provides uncapped data options for varying durations, ensuring that users have access to reliable internet services. Additionally, the “Shap Uncapped Freedom” plans offer time-based data usage, allowing customers to choose data packages that best fit their usage patterns.
The launch of the 4G LTE network and eSIM service is part of Paratus’s four-year digital transformation journey, aiming to provide Namibians with access to modern digital lifestyles. Executive Chairman Barney Harmse emphasized that the new network builds on years of infrastructure expansion, positioning Paratus at the forefront of the country’s digital evolution.
