Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah sounds alarm over rising suicides in Namibia

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has raised concern over the increasing number of suicides in the country, particularly among men.

“I stand before you today with a heavy heart to address a grave challenge that has profoundly affected our nation, the ever-rising wave of suicide, particularly among our men,”she said.

In 2023/2024 alone, 542 lives were lost, making Namibia the country with the highest suicide rate in Africa.
Over the past month, more than 10 people have died by suicide, highlighting the urgency of the crisis.

“This is not just a statistic; it| represents precious lives lost, broken families left behind and a nation in pain,”the President said.

She emphasized the role of traditional leaders, noting their wisdom, influence, and close connection to communities are vital in helping the Government understand the root causes of suicide.

The President called for practical solutions, urging collaboration to provide support, raise awareness, save lives, and ensure the well-being of all Namibians.
