The Namibia Media Professionals Union (NAMPU) has commended President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for declaring the media the fourth arm of the state at today’s first Ccabinet briefing in Windhoek.

NAMPU’s Acting Secretary General Jemimah Beukes said the union does not take for granted the fact that the President made this statement at the very first convening of the country’s new Cabinet.

Beukes said media freedom is a fundamental right, not a privilege, and it plays a critical role in maintaining democracy, transparency, and accountability.

“We are encouraged by President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s bold recognition of the media’s role, and her directive to her Cabinet stating the following: You must remain available to deal with queries and to work with the private sector, communities, the public, and other stakeholders, including the media, which is an important stakeholder in communicating policies and activities of Government.”

Beukes said it is a strong affirmation of the government’s responsibility to foster an environment where media workers are free to perform their duties without fear of repression or interference.

She added that NAMPU strongly believes that this commitment should translate into actions that protect journalists from intimidation, censorship, or any legal or political threats.

“It should ensure fair and equal access to information for all media organisations, regardless of their political or editorial stance and promote an ongoing culture of constructive engagement between the government and media organisations.” she said.

Beukes urges the Office of the President to ensure that an open-door policy is implemented as the media should be seen as a partner in nation-building, providing transparency, informing citizens, and contributing to the development of the country.
