Namibia has officially ratified the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Convention 156, aimed at protecting workers with family responsibilities.
Ambassador Julia Imene-Chanduru said the move strengthens Namibia’s commitment to gender equality and the promotion of family-friendly workplace policies. Labour analyst Sydwill Scholtz explained that the ratification ensures men and women can balance work and family obligations while fully participating in the labour market.
The convention, adopted in 1981, calls on countries to implement measures that accommodate employees with dependent children or other family responsibilities, reinforcing protections already outlined in Namibia’s Constitution and Labour Act.
