Yakisoba is a Japanese noodle dish that literally translates to grilled (yaki) noodles (soba). This Japanese dish has a heavy Chinese influence and is very similar to Chinese Chow Mein. Yakisoba can use either wheat noodles (like ramen) or traditional buckwheat noodles (soba noodles). The noodles are stir fried with meat and vegetables. So, let’s get straight in to how you can make Yakisoba at home.

Ingredients:

  • Yakisoba Sauce (you can make this at home): Add Worcestershire Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Tomato Sauce, Soy Sauce and Brown Sugar
  • Yakisoba noodles: These noodles are sold in most grocery stores in the fridge section, they can be replaced with ramen noodles.
  • Oil: Any of your choice for a little flavour added
  • Protein: Substitute the chicken with beef, pork, pork belly, or seafood such as calamari or shrimp. And for vegan or vegetarian options, you can use tofu or stick to just veggies.
  • Onions
  • Carrot: Cut into thin strips, or also called matchstick or julienne cut.
  • Cabbage: I cut them into small squares
  • Mushrooms (if that’s your thing)

Directions:

  1. In a bowl combine all the Yakisoba sauce ingredients together. Set aside.
  2. Remove the noodles from their package, and place in a colander. Rinse well and drain. While rinsing you will have to separate the noodles with your hands.
  3. In a large wok or skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces (or your other protein) and cook until ready. Add the sliced onion and carrots and cook for another 2 minutes until the onion softens. Add the mushrooms, cabbage and green onions. Toss everything together and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the Yakisoba noodles to the wok then pour the sauce over everything. Toss everything together using tongs. Cook for another 2 minutes until the noodles heat through.
  5. Serve immediately.

Now you have an easy meal with some leftovers or for meal prep 🙂
