Jason Derulo explained why he sings his own name in his songs

You don’t say Jason Derulo’s name – you sing it.

The ‘Whatcha Say’ hitmaker has been belting out his name at the start of his songs since he burst onto the music scene in 2009 with his self-titled debut album.

That’s right, we’ve had 14 years of him serenading us with his own moniker – and it’s been music to our ears.

Or you might think he sounds like a broken record. There is just no in-between.

And it’s pretty synonymous with the singer at this point – so much so that people are demanding it of him at this point:

The fact that Derulo, 34, also has a book titled Sing Your Name Out Loud: 15 Rules for Living Your Dream only supports this argument, but either way, he’s certainly an advocate for giving yourself a shoutout.

But he admitted that he had been seriously considering giving up his trademark at one point.

He told Good Morning America back in June that it had become ‘too much’ for him, but a TikTok trend persuaded him to revive his name-dropping habit.

He said: “As you can imagine, people were asking me to sing their name all the time, asking me to sing my name… it just became too much and I was like I’m not doing this no more.

“And then during the pandemic, there was like a whole TikTok trend that was going on which was like ‘bring the Jason Derulo back!’ So I was like, ‘ok, I’ll bring it back’.”

But have you ever wondered why he decided to start singing his own name at the top of his lungs?

Well, he dished the dirt on what drove him to include the shoutout to himself all those years ago during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2020.

Talking about the signature addition to his songs, he said: “Well, it’s a bigger hit if I sing my name at the front, you know, obviously. So, yeah, I had to bring that back.

“And I was actually wondering why other people didn’t sing my name at the front of their songs as well, because it worked so well for me.

Has he never heard of Mr Worldwide, aka Pitbull? Or what about Sean Paul? Then again, turns out he was never saying ‘Sean de Paul’ in his hits.
