The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) has condemned a shooting incident at a community court session in Iilokola village operatibg under the Ondonga Traditional Authority, in which one traditional leader was killed and another injured.
IPC spokesperson Immanuel Nashinge said the incident raises serious concerns about security at community courts across the country.
He noted that a platform meant to resolve disputes peacefully instead turned violent, with fatal consequences.
Nashinge said the IPC has long advocated for the deployment of police officers at community courts, particularly during official hearings.
He recalled assurances previously given by the minister of justice and labour relations that courts would be protected during sessions, but said the shooting shows those commitments remain unfulfilled.
He added that most community courts lack the capacity and equipment to respond to violent incidents, leaving traditional leaders, court officials, and the public exposed.
The IPC hapd urged government to urgently strengthen security at both community and formal courts, including the introduction of basic public screening measures.
Nashinge also called on traditional leaders to handle land disputes with urgency and seriousness, warning that unresolved land issues have the potential to escalate into violence.
The IPC hpas extended its condolences to the families and communities affected by the incident.
