Interview: Lifeline/Childline Empowers Teachers Through Counselling Training

todaySeptember 9, 2025

Background

Teachers from Tangeni Shilongo and surrounding schools are participating in a five-day Personal Growth and Basic Counselling Skills training hosted by Lifeline/Childline at the coast. Shamyn Scott, Counselling Centre Coordinator, says the sessions are designed to equip educators with essential skills to support learners’ emotional well-being.

“This training is one in a million,” Scott explains. “It covers self-awareness, conflict resolution, and sensitive topics such as death and grieving. We believe that in order to counsel others effectively, one must first understand themselves and recognize their limits.”

The program also introduces participants to the fundamentals of counselling, including session models, empathy, and when to refer cases beyond their scope. Teachers are guided on how to approach complex issues while maintaining professional and emotional boundaries.

Scott highlighted the importance of addressing grief during the training, emphasizing that everyone experiences loss differently. “You don’t need to compare your grieving process to anyone else’s. It’s crucial to allow yourself to experience emotions at your own pace,” she said, adding that rising suicide cases make this guidance more urgent than ever.

Beyond skill-building, the training also raises awareness about Lifeline/Childline’s services. Scott encouraged the public to support friends, family, and colleagues who might be struggling, and to share the organization’s helplines, 116 and 106. “Help is just a phone call away,” she noted.

The initiative also strengthens teachers’ personal growth and resilience, allowing them to better engage with learners while fostering a supportive school environment. The dedication and enthusiasm of participants have been inspiring, with the next two days expected to deepen these skills further.

📢 Updated training dates for Windhoek will be announced soon. Teachers and stakeholders are encouraged to stay tuned for more opportunities to engage with Lifeline/Childline’s programs and resources.
