Social justice activist Herbert Jauch weighed in on the persistent challenges of poverty and unemployment, drawing attention to the urgent need for practical government interventions. Speaking in the context of reflecting on the legacy of Veikko Nekundi, a respected national figure, Jauch noted that while these issues have been widely acknowledged for years, what is now needed is clear and actionable plans from the administration.
“The issue of poverty and unemployment in itself is not surprising,” Jauch said. “This has been talked about for many years and we all know that these are some of the key problems facing the country today.” He stressed that the public wants to hear concrete steps and details on how the government plans to tackle these longstanding issues.
Jauch pointed out that a significant policy measure still lacking official commitment is the introduction of a basic income grant (BIG). He highlighted that such a grant would not only immediately reduce poverty but could also serve as a vital economic stimulus package.
“We have not heard yet a pronouncement on the basic income grant which would make an immediate dent in poverty and would also be very important as an economic stimulus package,” he stated.
With growing impatience among the population, Jauch urged the administration to move swiftly from general statements to specific policy actions. “What will be interesting in the following weeks is to see what the administration is planning to practically do to significantly reduce poverty and unemployment because the time for general announcements is over,” he said.
As the country continues to grapple with socioeconomic challenges, Jauch’s call underscores the need for bold leadership and clear policy direction that can build on the values of social justice exemplified by leaders like Veikko Nekundi.
