Human Biltong for Sale!!!

Marketing is powerful! There are some adverts out there, that screw whatever the product is, JUST because of the marketing, I’m sold… whatever it is! 

Look at Nando’s… we all remember their adverts! 

And while some companies can have teams to come up with great idea’s, sometimes all you need is a catchy name! 

In South Africa, people are doing are doing a double take when they pass a little biltong stalletjie and notice the sign!

Nope!!! It’s not a typo… it is 100% genuine Human Biltong!!!

But let me explain:

When you stop and enter, you might be expecting a scenario that’ll make Hannibal Lector salivate!

But instead, 84-year-old oom Pieter will great you, and you realize… there is no “long pig” for sale.

It’s a name, that got a little lost in translation! 

There is a long standing tradition of naming businesses etc. with a family name

Keeping with that tradition, the “Human Biltong” stand, was opened by Oom Pieter Human (pronounced He-mun) 25 years ago! 

It’s not his fault his surname is spelt EXACTLY the same as the English word “Human!”

It does make for a good laugh, and 1 hell of a marketing opportunity! 

No one is saying the biltong at the stalletjie won’t pair well with a nice chianti and some fava beans, but you don’t have to worry that you’re neighbour who you haven’t seen in a while, is in the oily brown bag you just bought!!! Right..?
