China has pledged to open its markets wider to Namibian exports, including agricultural products, energy, and minerals, as part of a broader push to strengthen economic ties.
Bilateral trade between the two countries reached USD 1.3 billion in 2024.
At the Beijing Forecast Summit in September 2024, China committed to increasing imports from Africa, with Namibia among the key beneficiaries.
Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, on Monday hinted that more Namibian products will soon be cleared for export to China, following agreements already in place.
“As President Xi Jinping announced at the Beijing Forecast Summit last September, China will provide even wider access for African agricultural products. And we will only open our door even bigger to the other side, especially to our friends in the global south, including our African countries,” he said.
“We had already agreed to import from Namibia during the Forecast Summit, and I think you will hear good news soon again about China importing more Namibian products. I won’t announce it now, but just wait,” Weiping added.
He highlighted uranium as a key area of economic cooperation between the two nations, noting that Chinese-owned mines in Namibia contribute significantly to job creation and GDP.
“Uranium is a very important area for China-Namibia economic cooperation and bilateral trade. The two mines in which China holds the largest share—Husab and Rössing—play a vital role,” he said.
According to Weiping, the mines contribute about 7% to Namibia’s national GDP and have created around 6,000 jobs for Namibians, along with substantial contributions to national revenue.
Namibia currently exports beef, fish, copper, and uranium to China, among other commodities.
