Kunene Governor, Vipua Muharukua said earlier consultations with OvaHimba and OvaTjimba indigenous communities identified a second location for the proposed 878-megawatt Baynes Hydropower dam in Kunene.

Muharukua said that consent was received from the affected communities at Orokaue in that region, adding he was surprised at the actions of the same group who handed over a petition to mines minister Modestus Amutse.

The petition carries 2 011 signatures from OvaHimba and OvaTjimba people in Namibia and Angola, and more than 500 people have supported the petition online in solidarity with communities along the Kunene River.

Muharukua said people will not be relocated for no reason or against their will, and there should be compensation for those affected.

He highlighted some of the benefits of the Baynes Hydropower Dam project, for the greater community living along the Kunene River.

Receiving the petition in Windhoek, Industries, Mines and Energy Minister, Modestus Amutse acknowledged the need for a roundtable dialogue between the parties involved, to reach an amicable understanding and way forward.
