Monarch lifeguard and emergency services owner, Martin Muyenga, says holiday season lifeguard services at beaches and pools in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund are progressing well.

Muyenga noted that the busiest days, 25 December 2025 and 1 January 2026 passed without any drowning incidents.

“Every year, lifeguard deployments along Namibia’s coastline bring unique challenges, especially people swimming under the influence of alcohol and drugs and kids unsupervised.

We thank God that these issues remain under control, thanks to our certified lifeguards thorough preparation and training for such difficult situations,” he said.

Muyenga said a major challenge was that of a multiple rescue incident on 7 December involving two drowning cases at Swakopmund’s Platz Am Meer, a non swimming zone earlier during the holiday season.

A 12-year-old girl lost her life in the incident.

“It is heartbreaking to lose lives in designated non swimming zones, particularly when alcohol play a role in people venturing into these dangerous areas.” he :said.

Rescue services at some beach sites will continue until 5 January and
11 January respectively.

Muyenga said the company will shift focus to water safety awareness education in the community and swimming lesson programs.

“These remain the most effective solutions for drowning prevention before Lifeguarding services comes in,” he said.

He said that services will still be still available in other water rescue situations, especially with the current rainy season.
