Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) Member of Parliament John Louw has urged structural reforms in Parliament to ensure smoother operations and better service delivery to citizens. Speaking in a recent interview, Louw highlighted the need for both short-term and long-term solutions to address inefficiencies that have slowed parliamentary processes since the September sitting.
According to Louw, the current system is plagued by delays and congestion, with sessions frequently starting late and limited time allocated to speakers. He suggested that Parliament should strictly enforce time limits for each speaker, extend sitting hours during busy periods, and hold Friday sessions to reduce backlog. These measures, he said, will allow MPs to ask critical questions and ensure motions are processed without unnecessary delays.
Louw also stressed the role of the opposition in holding the executive accountable. “Our role as an opposition is to keep the executives accountable by asking questions, and these questions must be answered,” he said. The IPC MP highlighted that only by decluttering parliamentary procedures can MPs focus on motions that address pressing societal issues.
Looking ahead, Louw revealed that IPC’s motions will prioritize “bread and butter” matters—issues that directly affect the daily lives of citizens. He emphasized that motions are not just formalities but strategic tools to guide government action and implement solutions that serve the public.
The MP also pointed out that challenges in Parliament often stem from outdated practices rather than laws or rules themselves. Changing these practices, he said, requires an objective understanding and a structured approach to ensure the system functions more effectively.
Louw concluded by encouraging citizens to follow IPC’s motions closely, noting that the party is committed to proposing practical solutions and ensuring they reach the appropriate committees for implementation. He reiterated that improving parliamentary efficiency is key to better governance and more responsive service delivery.
