Ophthalmologist Dr. Helena Ndume and her medical team have restored the sight of more than 360 elderly patients during the Omusati Surgical Eye Campaign, organised by the Ministry of Health and Social Services at St Martin Roman Catholic Hospital in Oshikuku. The initiative is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to reduce preventable blindness and improve access to specialist healthcare in rural communities.
Dr. Ndume, internationally recognised for her humanitarian work, said the surgeries were life-changing for patients who had suffered from cataracts and other vision-impairing conditions. “Restoring sight not only improves the quality of life but also allows people to live independently again,” she noted.
The campaign, supported by local healthcare workers and volunteers, also provided eye screenings, post-surgery care, and education on eye health. Officials say more outreach programmes are planned for other regions to ensure that all Namibians, regardless of location, have access to vital eye care services.
