Namibia has officially entered formal consultations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as it advances plans to develop a nuclear power plant. This ambitious energy project is expected to span at least a decade, reflecting the complexity and scale involved.
Executive Director at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Ben Nangombe, said that the project will be developed under stringent international guidelines. Namibia must meet 19 critical infrastructure criteria established by the IAEA to ensure safety, security, and operational efficiency.
“The development of nuclear energy is a long-term strategic project for Namibia, guided by global standards to ensure sustainable and safe energy production,” Nangombe stated.

The move comes as Namibia explores diversifying its energy sources to meet rising demand and promote energy security. Nuclear power offers the potential for a reliable, low-carbon energy supply, complementing the country’s growing investments in renewable energy such as solar and wind.
What’s next?
Namibia’s nuclear journey will involve detailed feasibility studies, infrastructure development, regulatory frameworks, and capacity building, all under the watchful eye of the IAEA. The consultations mark a critical first step in aligning Namibia’s nuclear ambitions with international best practices.
