Teeing Off for a Cause: The Michelle McLean Children Trust Golf Day Sunet
Minecraft still reigns supreme over a decade after its release, thanks to its endless sandbox of quirky gameplay and boundless creativity. But now, there’s a new contender in town—a bizarre yet strangely fascinating game called Oasis, which launched just last month. Think of it as a Minecraft fanfiction, but written by an AI that has its own peculiar interpretation of the game world.
Developed by Israeli AI startup Decart, in collaboration with Etched (a company that makes custom silicon), Oasis takes a wild twist on the Minecraft formula. Instead of being powered by the usual game engine, this world is entirely dreamed up by a transformer-based AI. In other words, the game’s visuals aren’t pre-rendered or coded by hand—they’re generated frame by frame by an AI model that was apparently trained on endless hours of Minecraft gameplay footage.
This isn’t some generic AI-powered art generator though. The AI works like a bizarre cross between a video renderer and a digital daydreamer, generating the world’s next frame based on the one it just “saw.” It’s kind of like the AI equivalent of trying to build a Lego house with a blindfold on—what you build next is partly influenced by what’s already there, but with a lot of unpredictable, strange results.
For example, if you focus on a texture too long, don’t be surprised if you look up and find that the world has subtly (or dramatically) shifted. Maybe that mountain you were eyeing has morphed into a floating pyramid, or that blocky sheep you were petting now looks like an abstract impression of a sheep. Oasis has a mind of its own, and that mind is, shall we say, a little… unpredictable.
Now, the crazy part: Oasis isn’t even an entirely original concept. It’s basically a twisted, AI-generated love child of Minecraft and Sora—a video-generating model—except with user input. The game is powered by a neural network trained on an open-source Minecraft dataset from OpenAI, which means it has a deep-seated love for all things blocky, even if it doesn’t always get it right.
Still, the result is nothing short of mesmerizing. Whether you’re watching your environment morph into an abstract mess or trying to get the AI to hallucinate new, bizarre landscapes, it’s like being trapped inside a surreal, Inception-like dream. And since it’s available to play for free online, it’s quickly become a viral hit among those curious to see what happens when you let an AI run wild in a world of blocks.
Expect to encounter everything from glitchy livestock to impossible staircases, and don’t be surprised if the AI generates a nightmare (or a dream) that’s both hilariously chaotic and strangely compelling. In short, Oasis is Minecraft on a weird, mind-bending acid trip—and it’s a trip well worth taking.
Here you go try it for yourself:
