In today’s world, there is so much pressure on us to succeed. Doing just the normal 8-5 isn’t good enough anymore. We are expected to hustle 24/7.
Technology doesn’t exactly help either since it provides a platform that ensures we are never really away from the office, even when we’re physically ‘away from the office’.
It sounds contradicting, I know, but let me explain.
Have you ever checked your work e-mails after work hours?
Or sat at home completing work projects or assignments late at night?
Yes. That’s exactly what I mean. We’re never really away from work.
See back in the day the only time you were working was the time you were actually at work – these days that’s not the case. People are constantly working and thinking about work and it has led to an increase in overall stress.
Now while most people know that stress isn’t fun, not a lot of people are aware of the fact that stress is killing us, slowly but surely.
One 40-year-long study found that people are working themselves into an early grave – literally.
In the study, they found that people who took fewer than 3 weeks of vacation every year, were 37 % more likely to die compared to those who took three weeks or more.
The scariest part of the study was that this result remained unaffected by a healthy lifestyle.
This ultimately means that you can exercise and eat healthy all you want but if you don’t take vacation for more than 3 weeks a year, you’re more likely to die – and this is all thanks to stress!
So while you might feel pressured to work harder and longer – don’t!
It’s okay to give yourself a break now and then.
Don’t be afraid to take a vacation and don’t be scared to switch off your phone and disconnect from the office.
Now if someone can just tell my bank account that I desperately need a vacation that would be nice because, at the moment, the only place I can afford to go to is my backyard.
