The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has issued a press release condemning the actions seen in a video circulating on social media in which a leopard was hunted and killed using dogs and an axe.
The press release states that it is understood that the leopard had killed several livestock on the farm in the Otjiwarongo district and that the farmer therefore took it upon himself to set a spring trap in which the leopard was caught, saying it is regrettable that the animal was killed in such a cruel and illegal manner using inappropriate means. The Ministry is in the final stages of investigating the incident and will decide what measures to take against the offenders. The press release goes on to say that the Ministry appeals to all Namibians to work closely with nature conservation officials and condemns the developing trend of individuals taking the law into their own hands and killing so-called 'problem animals'.
