Daya - Sit still look pretty
Daya's Top 40 single "Hide Away" and her star turn on the Chainsmokers' banger "Don't Let Me Down" made her a surprisingly soulful leader of a new kind of bubblegum: EDM-leaning pop paired with Radio Disney-friendly lyrics. Still, despite a role as somewhat of an innovator, her debut album, Sit Still, Look Pretty, is little more than perfectly serviceable attempt to grasp the always-fleeting zeitgeist of the internet age. It hits all the right notes of what made early Aughts pop both charming and addictive, but with little to dig deeper or update beyond some complaints about how "Thirsty" a boy can be, minor references to Internet jargon ("I.C.Y.M.I.") and nods to pop culture ("I don't believe in Yeezus/I like him Kanye West"). In the end, the forced attempts to stay on top of the moment feel like an older person's idea of what teens like as opposed to learning more about the actual lovelorn 17-year-old belting the songs. At the center of the conundrum is the partially empowering title track, a catchy ode to not ending up as some "trophy wife" only desired for her looks – in the end it comes off like a manifesto of not being like the Other Girls while still trapped inside a not-especially unique album.

Olly Murs - Grow Up
Olly Murs returns to radiofriendly pop on ‘Grow Up’

If you ask us, Olly Murs came back with one of the best singles of his career earlier this year. ‘You Don’t Know Love’ is a powerful synth pop banger with a lot of attitude and a big chorus. If you ask the British charts however, this track was not at all up there with his most successful work to date. That is probably why Olly decided to lay off the synth pop for a while and return to the catchy radio pop he used to put out before with the new single ‘Grow Up’, also taken from the upcoming album 24 Hours, to be released in November. If only it was the good kind of radio pop…

Bruno Mars - 24K Magic
The words “24K Magic” might not have been familiar, but everything gleaming inside of it — the glittery disco synths, the cheesed-up vocoder flourishes, the popped-collar call-and-responses — certainly was. That doesn’t make Mars’ grand return any less exciting, or “24K Magic” any less impressive: The reference points are just clearer now, more than they’ve ever been, and if a synthesis of some well-worn ideas can stand on its own, what’s to prevent the masses from pressing play

Nothing, it turns out. “24K Magic” is probably going to be a smash hit, just a few months after another piece of superb nostalgia, Stranger Things, dominated pop culture. You know the familiar feeling you got when you first heard the Stranger Things theme music and watched those red letters slowly come together onscreen? Bruno Mars knows that feeling well, and has harnessed it into a killer groove.
